VerticalScope Inc

A large media holding company with 100’s (or more) of niche sites under management. They seem to have an acquisition oriented growth strategy that paid off greatly when they sold a majority of the business a few years ago for >10x EBITDA.

Many of the sites appear to be legacy forums and blogs that are being milked for declining display ad dollars, although they appeared twice on this list with TheSleepJudge and SleepBuffs so they seem to also understand and embrace affiliate monetization.

JAKK Media

Founded ~5 years ago by ivy league MBAs, JAKK was originally a startup SEO agency. Seems like they gained enough traction with their own affiliate properties to transition to a proper affiliate media player.

High effort content, with true expert writers, and a strong YouTube presence. High quality sites that provide a good standard of what to aim for when starting an affiliate brand. Not 100% transactional content, high quality videos, ect.

Public brands that operate include BarBend, SecurityBaron, Sleepoplis, & Mattress Clarity.

Part of a holding company that includes an agency and other digital offering, Three Ships appears to be the affiliate arm of the company. They have been actively acquiring and looking for new opportunities in the sleep space and have a presence in CBD and medical lead gen as well.

Know Ventures

An affiliate driven media company that has been crushing Youtube over the past few years with their RIZknows and SlumberYard brands. Definitely a strong understanding of quality content creation and SEO.

It looks like they are launching a new brand targeting cooler, grills, and patio furniture called “Cooler Corner” under their parent brand Know Ventures. Definitely an interesting company to follow as they replicate their winning model in other verticals.

They have been involved in linkbuilding and SEO for decades and appear to have an affinity for building strong, profitable brands on high quality 1 word .com domains.

It’s difficult to discern the owners of many of the paid sleep comparison affiliate sites as most of their landing pages are very similar.

They are typically hosted on unbranded domains such as 10 best/top/reviews mattress .com/.org and features a “best” list.

It’s interesting to monitor CRO techniques these companies use to improve their yield, but it’s hard to comment much on this area as the specifics are ever-changing and many are likely operating with custom affiliate rates or brands posing as affiliates who can out spend affiliates with public commission rates.

Recommendations for Entering The Space Today

If you roll up a few of the highest ranking niche sleep affiliates, you become a “kingmaker” for new mattress brands or your own. This can give increased leverage in the market for higher affiliate rates and opportunities to cross promote your sites via links, email lists, pixels, ect.

Affiliates Launching Brands or Brands Acquiring Media

Note: We are not talking about Casper’s Vanwinkles.com style “branded” mid-top funnel media.

The funding of Sleepoplis acquisition was a signal of what’s to come.

SleepJunkie.org and BestMattress-Brand.org are some of the top 10 niche mattress affiliate blogs are currently operated by Amerisleep.

Quite literally a brand can be be built on the back of a successful affiliate site. Due to to lack of brand affinity, this space is about distribution/media> product.

A mattress supplier can instantly ad value to most any affiliate site by recommending themselves and getting their full margin rather than a 5-25% commission depending on the program of the previously recommended mattresses. Meaning they can likely afford to pay a higher multiple than a pure financial buyer.

Illusion of Choice

Companies will begin to launch multiple brands to give the illusion of choice and target different demographics and price points.

Some examples of this already happening include:

If you had a flyer or notecard on every bedside table or welcome packet says something like. “Enjoy your mattress?, Buy Your Own & Get $100 Off go to: *branded* URL which could redirect to an affiliate link.

For example, if the mattresses are replaced every 3 years and they cost $1000 with $200 commissions. I’d suspect that if you reached out every mattress company on this list, one (likely subsidized by venture dollars) would be willing to provide the mattresses for free or extremely reduced cost.

It could turn mattresses and bedding from an expense to a potential profit center.

Adult Ads/ Adult Performers

Or if an affiliate or brand hired an adult actress to unbox, review, or test out a mattress it might be an interesting concept that might do well on video channels and have a chance at virality.

The thesis here is that adult stars are underpriced based on the amount of attention they command due to their lack of “family friendliness” and brand deals from blue chip companies.

Maybe they could also offer personalized Cameo-style shoutout videos to buyers.

This is an excellent execution of an affiliate play in the sleep space.

While it’s difficult for us to estimate earnings due to the unknown conversion rates of YouTube channels, we would guess it’s in the $1.5-3mm per year range.

Our only critique of this project is the inconsistency in branding the YouTube Channel and site (The Slumber Yard vs. My Slumber Yard). While this isn’t a huge deal as affiliate links are mentioned, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea to shell out 4 or low 5 figures on a more premium name (think tuck.com) to create a halo effect around the brand and more consistent messaging.

Transactional Sleep Keyword Research & Breakdown

We did some moderate keyword research in the identified 1191 transaction terms that we believe fairly accurately represent the organic sleep traffic opportunity.
